A Simple Guide to Water Features

Well known for their calming properties, water features create a stunning display in your garden, home or any other space, for example, offices or entrances. Water features can be used both indoors & outdoors where there is access to electricity (some are solar powered allowing them to stand alone). The features come in a wide range of styles, from modern ones such as the stainless steel sphere or tubes, to more traditional urn style features or pouring bowls.

Types of features:

There are many different types of water features but they can be broadly categorised into the following:

  • Stainless Steel Water Features They are weather resistant and can add a beautiful effect to any space. The mirror properties of stainless steel mean that the effect goes beyond the feature itself, as it will reflect lights and mirror the surrounding area.

Stainless steel has also become the foremost material used in water feature design. Suitable for both contemporary and classical gardens due to simple shapes and of course the highly polished finish adding depth and light to shaded areas of your garden.

Because of its qualities, stainless steel is manufactured in several different grades each suitable for differing uses.

    Grades?

We only supply features of the highest quality which is why we always use '304 Grade' steel. This is the grade used for hospital surgical equipment, hypodermic needles, marine equipment etc. The grade 304 contains a high nickel content making it extremely resistant to corrosion even salt sprays, hence its use on yachts and ships.
Sheet thicknesses vary as appropriate to the design, size and shape of the feature.

  • Polyresin, Fiberglass (FRP) and Calcium Carbonate Water Features - They create a realistic rock or stone effect and can be moulded into any shape and texture. The features are much lighter than their rock counterparts allowing them to be moved easily than a carved rock equivalent.
  • Glass - Glass Wall fountains are an excellent way to decorate any interior. They offer something truly unique. A wall with a glass fountain will quickly become a centerpiece item in any room and will set off any design. Depending upon one's decor and one's design goals, there are numerous options where glass wall water fountains are concerned. For ultra-clean lines, many individuals choose glass wall water fountains with stainless steel elements. There are few design features so modern as are glass and steel and, together, they make a powerful effect.

  • Clear Acrylic / Acrylic Water Features - These clear acrylic water features are usually lit from the inside creating not only a great effect with water but from the light itself. Many have colour changing bulbs or LEDs that provide an interesting and soothing effect. The Acrylic made fountains is very durable. The material is very resistant to decay. They are also able to withstand fairly harsh environmental conditions. The light weight of the acrylic material makes them very popular.
  • Granite / Stone Features - Granite Stone is one of the most classic of water fountain materials. Stone can be cast into just about any form and, of course, it lends itself nicely to being decorated. Stone is one of the heaviest of fountain materials and, particularly where large models are concerned, this may be an issue for some individuals.

Fountain Maintenance:

The Water Fountains that we carry at deanneco.com will provide your home or workplace with enduring beauty and tranquility, but there are a few simple steps you should follow to prolong the life of your water fountain.

  • Banish algae - Treat your water fountain to a few drops of bleach, or anti-algae or anti-white scale water treatment. Do this no more than once a week, and use just one drop per gallon of water, otherwise your water fountain will mutate. Actually, bleach often contains chlorine, so too much of it would make your water fountain smell like a public swimming pool. Bleach can also have a bleaching effect (natch) on your water fountain's finish, so we recommended using our "Fountain Safe Cleaner" to keep the water clean and clear.

  • Clean regularly - Indoor Floor, Tabletop and Wall Fountains should be given a full cleaning every three to four months. Outdoor Fountains require more frequent cleaning. Regularly change the water and clean to prevent the built up sediment and algae. Remove all water from the fountain and wipe it clean with a soft cloth and material-appropriate cleaner.

  • Refill water regularly - Yes, to reduce the influence of water evaporates, so outdoor garden fountains or at the balcony fountains, in particular, need to be replenished regularly. A water fountain should contain enough water to keep its water fountain pump fully submerged. This will prolong its life and save you money. If your pump is noisier than usual, then either it needs to be cleaned or the water level is too low.

Most features require very little installation or maintenance as they come fully self-contained. All you need to do is plug them in and add water!

Caring for your fountain pump

  • Always make sure the fountain has sufficient water in to ensure the pump is fully submersed.
  • Clean and top the water up on a regular basis.
  • Always turn the power off to the fountain before maintain the pump.
  • Never allow the pump to run dry and this will cause damage and invalidate the warranty.

Where to site your water feature?

Water features can be sited almost anywhere. They mainly come with at least 3m of cable or an optional Long Extension Cable allowing you to install them at your choice of location. Some more traditional features can look best backed up against a wall, or fence where some are best left with space around them. The features can be used both indoors & outdoors so the possibilities are almost endless.

Hints and tips about electrical installation

The low voltage transformer used with many water features is rain proof, however, it should be placed in a free draining position. Ideally, we always recommended that it is kept in a shed or outbuilding or inside a weather proof box. This will prolong the life of the transformer.

When the fountain is switched on the transformer may get hot, this is normal.

Troubleshooting

We are here to help if you have any questions either before buying a water feature or after.

A few useful hints and tips and be found below.

The water pump seems to have stopped pumping?

  • Check the power is correctly connected.
  • Check that there is sufficient water inside the reservoir.
  • Check the pump and tubing for any form of obstruction.
  • Remove the cover on the side of the pump (the flow adjuster) which will reveal the pump impeller, gently turn the rotor to check that it is not broken or jammed with debris.

The pump is working but the flow doesn’t seem to be enough??

  • Make sure the flow regulator on the pump is turned up.
  • Ensure the pump is fully submersed in water.
  • Check the tubing connected to pump is not choke up with algae obstruction of the water flows due to the water has not been clean for long with algae build up.
  • Remove the cover on the side of the pump (the flow adjuster) which will reveal the pump impeller, gently turn the rotor to check that it is not broken or jammed with debris or algea.

The pump has started to make a slight rattling noise, what do I need to do?

  • Turn off the power supply and check the rota assembly by removing the pump cover and rotor plate front.
  • Grip the impellor and gently take out the rotor assembly from the pump. This can then be rinsed with the pump housing to remove any debris or grit.
  • If during this process you find any breakage or surface damage is found on the rotor assembly please contact us
